I loved Mad Men, but I never thought he was a great actor. His character was extremely guarded and closed, so he never really had scenes that had a lot of range. As others have said, he has limited range. He is not aging well either. He also doesn't seem to play the Hollywood game of keeping in shape. It was so disappointing to see him shirtless on MM - no shape, too soft.

He's had 35 credits after Mad Men. It's hard for actors with iconic roles to get the chance to play different types of parts. They're just very heavily associated with that character. Very few actors ever get a gig that good and even fewer get more than one. He was already in his mid/late 30s when he became famous. He was tied to a TV contract at that point so he could only do film roles that didn't conflict. He was in his 40s by the time Mad Men ended. Most movie leading men don't start that old. He's doing fine.

He was early mid-thirties when he got Mad Men and despite looking like Don Draper before that he wasn't considered star material, and HBO didn't think he was sexy. I think outside Mad Men he is still hard to cast and doesn't quite project what they need him to project. Most roles have something archtypical in them and Hamm really isn't an archtypical leading man in his qualities. For me he's most convincing as dad. And for all the notches on Don Draper's bed post, walls, carpets, cars, hotels, etc., he always projected a kind of idealized 1960s dad quality to me. There's not a lot of call for that in films//tv/theatre.

I think what he did best on Mad Men was crying/sobbing and also drinking. Don Draper was JH’s big role, the role of a lifetime where his casting was just right and the show took off, and most actors don’t ever get one of those jobs. He has been able to translate that experience into some film roles and guest TV work. He’s doing about as well as could be expected.

And what big studio films would you expect him to be cast as the lead in? He was already mid forties when Mad Men ended. And you have to remember that Mad Men didn’t have a huge audience; it wasn’t like Clooney coming off of ER.

Mad Men: the movie is an interesting idea. Wiener would not know how to tell a story in two hours, though. Or we'd see Megan Teefs, the movie.

Something that people forget is that Mad Men was a "niche" big hit. It did well with upscale, urban audiences. I remember articles being written about Mad Men making so much money for AMC because the audience was affluent and that they could charge more for 30 second ads by more upscale companies than other shows because of the audience demographics. Or to break it down they were selling Ford Pintos on CBS and Mercedes $ Class on AMC during Mad Men.
